Distance Announces Collaboration with General Dynamics Land Systems UK to Bring Lightfield HUD Technology to the GD Light Mobility Vehicle Platform - Enabling the Ford Ranger-Based Defence Vehicle with Next-GenXR Night Vision for Tactical Superiority, Demoed at DSEI 2025

26 August, 2025 - Helsinki and Oakdale, South Wales, United Kingdom - Distance Technologies™ Oy - the leading developer of glasses-free Mixed Reality enhanced with contextual AI and designed for integration into the windshields of state-of-the-art defense-oriented autos - today announced it is in collaboration with acclaimed prime defence contractor General Dynamics Land Systems-United Kingdom (GDLS-UK).
The technical work between Distance and GDLS-UK will bring next-generation situational awareness to ground vehicles for the first time, integrating Distance’s patented 3D Lightfield HUD technology — powered by infinite pixel depth and hyperspectral sensor fusion — directly into the GDLS-UK Light Mobility Vehicle platform. Specifically, this new technology development will deliver next-generation night vision capabilities directly through the windshield of GDLS-UK’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) platform, built on the proven Ford® Ranger platform.
Infinite 3D pixel depth rendering is seen directly through the LMV windshield, with no glasses or eyepieces required. Hyper-spectral sensor fusion as seen through the windshield includes not only the visible light spectrum, but also the infrared and thermal wavelengths. This enables easy detection of camouflaged enemy battalions and assets to achieve genuine vehicular force multiplication.
This technical breakthrough enables an entirely new class of lightfield-based Heads-Up Displays (HUDs) for augmented night vision in vehicles — combining high fidelity, depth perception and sensor fusion. The invisibly-mounted windshield system provides immersive perception enhancement for mobility, navigation and targeting of enemy assets in low-light as well as complex situational environments, such as smoke-filled battlefields as well as tactical night reconnaissance.
A real-time, functional prototype of the XR night vision system will be unveiled at the DSEI 2025 conference in London from 9-12 September 2025. Visitors to the GDLS-UK booth N3-210 will experience this state-of-the-art technology integrated into an LMV displayed on the show floor.
“We are very excited to be collaborating with a Prime contractor that is synonymous worldwide as a leader in defence-oriented technology innovation,” said Urho Konttori, CEO and co-founder of Distance Technologies. “This close collaboration underscores Distance’s rapid innovation in creating mission-critical perception solutions for high-demand defence use-cases. It also further reinforces Distance's value proposition as a deeptech enabler capable of scaling advanced sensing into real-world operational platforms defending land, sky and more.”
